Ai-Khanoum, a Greek city on the Oxus
The maxims of Delphi carved in stone 5,000 km from Delphi

Where the Oxus meets the Kokcha stood a Hellenistic city with a gymnasium, a theatre for thousands and a palace. One Clearchus copied the Delphic maxims and carved them here: 'As a child be well-behaved, as a youth self-controlled…'. The site was found in 1961 when Afghanistan's king came across a Corinthian capital while hunting.
