About thirty cave monasteries were cut into a cliff above a bend of the Waghora river in two phases; the most famous date to about 460–480 under the Vakataka king Harishena. Their frescoes of the Jatakas, tales of the Buddha's past lives, are the summit of ancient Indian painting. In 1819 a British officer, John Smith, stumbled on the caves while chasing a tiger.
