Babur's father, a descendant of Timur, died when a dovecote collapsed over a ravine, and the Andijan-born boy inherited the Fergana valley at eleven. He took and lost Samarkand three times, left for Kabul in 1504 and later conquered India, writing his memoirs, the Baburnama, in Turkic.
