The Baqt treaty with Nubia
Christian Nubia halts the Arabs for six centuries
In 652 an Arab army besieged Dongola, capital of the Christian kingdom of Makuria, but Nubian archers, nicknamed 'pupil smiters' by the Arabs, beat it back. The two sides agreed the Baqt: Nubia supplied slaves, Egypt supplied grain, wine and cloth. The pact lasted some 600 years, and Christian Nubia survived until the 14th century.
