The Battle of Arausio
Cimbri and Teutons wipe out two Roman armies on the Rhône
On 6 October 105 BC the Cimbri and Teutons destroyed two Roman armies at Arausio whose commanders could not cooperate; up to 80,000 legionaries died. Fear of a new invasion let Gaius Marius reform the army and make it professional.
