The warrior grave at Birka
The model Viking warrior turned out to be a woman
The 10th-century grave held a sword, axe, fighting knife, spears, two horses and a gaming set, and since its excavation in 1878 was the textbook male warrior burial. Bone analysis in 2014 and DNA in 2017 showed it was a woman; whether she was a warrior is still debated.
