The murals of Bonampak
Murals that shattered the myth of the peaceful Maya

Around 790 three rooms of a temple at Bonampak were painted with scenes of court ceremonies, a fierce battle and the execution of captives. In 1946 Lacandon Maya showed the temple to the American photographer Giles Healey. The murals overturned the then-popular image of the Maya as peaceful priest-astronomers.
