According to Chinese chronicles, in 192 a local ruler named Khu Liên broke away from the Han and founded the kingdom of Linyi on the coast of central Vietnam, the future Champa. The Cham people lived by sea trade, practised Hinduism and built brick tower-shrines at Mỹ Sơn. The last remnant of Champa was absorbed by Vietnam only in 1832.
