Around 200 in Galilee the patriarch Judah ha-Nasi gathered into one code the oral law that generations of sages had passed on by word of mouth, all the more precious after the destruction of the Temple in 70. The Mishnah's sixty-three tractates cover agriculture, festivals, marriage, courts and ritual purity. It became the basis of both Talmuds, the Jerusalem and the Babylonian, and of all rabbinic Judaism.
