Tree-ring dates show Cliff Palace was built from about 1190 to 1260. The Ancestral Puebloans raised some 150 rooms and 23 round ritual chambers, or kivas, in an alcove beneath a cliff. By 1300 the people had left Mesa Verde, probably because of drought and conflict.
