Magdeburg rights
Town self-government spreads east as far as Kyiv and Vilnius

In 1188 Archbishop Wichmann confirmed the rights of Magdeburg’s citizens, and the town law that grew up there became the model for hundreds of towns in Central and Eastern Europe. A town under Magdeburg law elected its own council, judged its residents and ran its trade free of the local lord. Kraków, Vilnius, Minsk, Polotsk, Kyiv and Lviv received it; in the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania and in Ukraine it lasted into the first half of the 19th century.
