Queen Himiko's embassy to China
The first ruler of Japan known to us by name
In 239 an embassy from Queen Himiko of Yamatai reached the court of the Chinese kingdom of Wei and obtained for her the title 'Queen of Wa, friend of Wei' and a gold seal. The Chinese chronicle describes Himiko as a shaman-priestess who lived in seclusion. Whether Yamatai lay in Kyushu or around Nara is still debated.
