Jayavarman VII restores Angkor
A Buddhist king builds the Bayon's stone faces and 100 hospitals

After the Cham sacked Angkor in 1177, Jayavarman VII drove them out and was crowned in 1181. He built the new capital of Angkor Thom with the Bayon temple and its giant stone faces, as well as over a hundred hospitals and rest houses. Under him the Khmer Empire reached its greatest extent.
