The Maccabean Revolt
Rebels reclaim the Temple, the origin of Hanukkah

The Seleucid king Antiochus IV banned Jewish rites and defiled the Temple in Jerusalem. The priest Mattathias and his sons, led by Judas Maccabeus, rose in revolt and freed Jerusalem in 164 BC. The rededication of the Temple is marked by Hanukkah, and the Hasmonean dynasty later built an independent Judean kingdom.
