Madinat al-Zahra
The caliph of Córdoba builds a palace city

In 936 Abd al-Rahman III, who had proclaimed himself caliph seven years earlier, began building the palace city of Madinat al-Zahra near Córdoba, with the court, government offices and the mint. It was sacked in 1010 during the civil war and lay in ruins until excavated in the 20th century.
