Fall of Zenobia's Palmyrene Empire
A desert queen defied Rome and seized half its East
After the death of Palmyra's ruler Odaenathus, his widow Zenobia, ruling for their son, took Egypt, Syria and much of Asia Minor. In 272 Emperor Aurelian defeated her army and captured the queen herself. When the city rebelled a year later the Romans sacked it, and the richest caravan city of the desert never recovered.
