Pueblo Bonito at Chaco Canyon
Hundreds of desert rooms built without wheels or draft animals
Around 850, Ancestral Puebloans began building the great house of Pueblo Bonito in Chaco Canyon. Over three centuries it grew to some 600 to 800 rooms on several storeys and remained one of North America's largest buildings until the late 19th century. Roof beams were carried in from dozens of kilometres away, and arrow-straight roads radiated from Chaco.
