Venetians spirit away the relics of St Mark
The relics were reputedly hidden under pork

In 828 two Venetian merchants carried the relics of St Mark out of Alexandria. Tradition says they covered the basket with pork so that Muslim customs officers would not search it. Venice built St Mark's Basilica for the relics, and Mark's lion became its emblem.
