Samarra becomes the caliph's capital
The caliph moves his Turkic guard to a new city on the Tigris

Caliph al-Mu'tasim, whose Turkic guard clashed with the people of Baghdad, moved his capital to the new city of Samarra further up the Tigris. The Great Mosque with its spiral Malwiya minaret was built there. Samarra remained the caliphs' seat until 892, while the guard took to making and unmaking caliphs.
