Sarazm, Tajikistan's oldest town
A town of metalworkers trades gems across half of Asia

In the 4th millennium BC a settlement in the Zeravshan valley mined and smelted metal and worked stone for traders from the steppe, Iran and Baluchistan. The grave of the 'Princess of Sarazm' held beads of turquoise, carnelian and lapis lazuli; in 2010 it became Tajikistan's first UNESCO site.
