Fortress of Sarkel
Byzantine engineers build the Khazars a fortress on the Don

Around 833, at the Khazar khagan's request, Emperor Theophilos sent the engineer Petronas Kamateros to the Don, where he built the brick fortress of Sarkel, the 'White House'. Sviatoslav took it in 965 and it became the Rus' town of Belaya Vezha; its ruins now lie beneath the Tsimlyansk Reservoir.
