By 200 BC the Sarmatians had taken over the steppes north of the Black Sea, and the centre of the Scythians moved to Crimea. On the site of modern Simferopol grew their capital, Neapolis, the city of kings Skilurus and Palacus, who fought Chersonesus; the Goths destroyed it in the 3rd century AD.
