The Neanderthals of Shanidar Cave
A disabled man cared for, and a burial perhaps with flowers

In the 1950s the remains of ten Neanderthals were found in a cave in northern Iraq. Shanidar 1, probably blind in one eye, with a withered arm and injured legs, still reached a mature age, so others must have looked after him; pollen in the grave of Shanidar 4 gave rise to the famous, if disputed, "flower burial".
