Spartacus' revolt
A gladiator leads Italy's slaves against Rome
In 73 BC some seventy slaves led by the Thracian Spartacus broke out of a gladiator school in Capua. His army grew to tens of thousands and defeated Roman legions for two years, until Crassus crushed it in 71 BC; six thousand captives were crucified along the Appian Way.
