On Raiatea in the Society Islands, by various estimates around 1000, a marae complex arose: paved courts with upright stones for ceremonies. Taputapuātea became a shared sanctuary of East Polynesia: by tradition chiefs sailed here from other archipelagos, and stones taken from it were set into the foundations of new marae on distant islands. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017.
