The Tuʻi Tonga maritime empire
An empire whose roads were ocean routes
By tradition, around 950 a dynasty of sacred rulers, the Tuʻi Tonga, descended from the sky god Tangaloa, took power in Tonga. In the 12th–15th centuries its influence spread by large double canoes to Samoa, Fiji, Uvea and Niue. From that age remain the stone tombs, or langi, at Muʻa and the Haʻamonga ʻa Maui trilithon, a gateway of three multi-ton coral slabs.
