Year of the Six Emperors
Rome goes through six emperors in a single year
In 238 landowners of the province of Africa proclaimed the 80-year-old governor Gordian I and his son emperors at Thysdrus; the Senate recognised them, but both were dead within three weeks. Maximinus Thrax was killed by his own troops at Aquileia, the Senate's emperors Pupienus and Balbinus by the Praetorians, and the throne passed to 13-year-old Gordian III.
