Armenia
The First Republic of Armenia was proclaimed on 28 May 1918 after the break-up of the Transcaucasian Federation, with its capital at Yerevan. It fought Turkey and its neighbours over disputed lands and took in hundreds of thousands of refugees from the Armenian genocide. The 1920 Treaty of Sèvres promised it lands in eastern Anatolia, but after defeat by Kemalist Turkey in December 1920 power passed to the Bolsheviks and the Armenian SSR was proclaimed.
