First Republic of Armenia
Armenians regain a state of their own after centuries
On 28 May 1918 the Armenian National Council declared independence, with Yerevan, crowded with genocide survivors, as capital. The republic endured famine and wars with its neighbours, and in late 1920, after defeat in a war with Turkey, came under Bolshevik rule as the Red Army entered Yerevan.
