The death of Scott's polar party
Amundsen's tent awaited them at the Pole, then death

On 17 January 1912 Robert Falcon Scott and four companions reached the South Pole and found the Norwegian flag: Amundsen had beaten them by five weeks. All five died on the return march from cold, hunger and exhaustion. The last three were found in their tent in November 1912, about 18 km from a supply depot. Scott's diary made their fate one of the best-known stories of polar exploration.
