Oil struck at Masjed Soleyman
A gusher in the Persian hills opens the region's oil age

On 26 May 1908, after seven fruitless years of drilling under William Knox D'Arcy's concession, geologist George Reynolds struck a gusher. The Anglo-Persian Oil Company — the future BP — was founded a year later. The Royal Navy soon switched from coal to oil, and the Middle East became the world's chief oil reservoir.
