Battle of Omdurman
Kitchener's machine guns against the Mahdist army
On 2 September 1898 Herbert Kitchener's Anglo-Egyptian army, armed with Maxim guns, threw back the attacks of 35,000–50,000 warriors of the Khalifa Abdallahi near Omdurman. Some 12,000 Sudanese were killed against fewer than fifty of the victors; the Mahdist State fell and Sudan became Anglo-Egyptian.
