First Sino-Japanese War
A modernised Japan defeats the Qing Empire

The war began over control of Korea, where the Donghak peasant rebellion had broken out. Japan's army and navy, rebuilt on Western lines, routed Qing forces at Pyongyang and the Qing fleet off the Yalu. By the Treaty of Shimonoseki in 1895 China recognised Korea's independence, ceded Taiwan to Japan and paid a huge indemnity. The balance of power in Asia was overturned.
