The Mahdists take Khartoum
The British relief force arrives just two days too late

The Sudanese preacher Muhammad Ahmad, proclaiming himself the Mahdi, rose against Egyptian-British rule. After a ten-month siege his fighters stormed Khartoum on 26 January 1885 and killed General Charles Gordon; the British relief force arrived two days later. The Mahdist state lasted until 1898, when its army was mown down by machine guns at Omdurman.
