Baku oil boom and Branobel
By 1900 Baku pumps about half of the world's oil

After the state oil monopoly ended in 1872, investors poured into Baku; in 1879 the brothers Ludvig and Robert Nobel founded Branobel, which built the first successful oil tanker, the Zoroaster, and a pipeline. By 1901 the Baku fields produced about half of the world's oil.
