Russia went to war in April 1877, after the brutal suppression of the Bulgarian April Uprising. After the defence of Shipka and the five-month siege of Plevna the Russian army reached Istanbul; the Treaty of San Stefano created a Greater Bulgaria, later cut down at the Congress of Berlin, and Romania, Serbia and Montenegro became independent.
