Spear-armed Zulus deal Britain one of its worst defeats

Battle of Isandlwana
After John Charles Dollman · Public domain · Wikimedia Commons

On 22 January 1879 some 20,000 Zulu warriors fell on a British camp below Isandlwana hill. Deployed in the traditional 'horns of the buffalo', they surrounded and killed more than 1,300 rifle-armed British troops and allies. It was the British army's worst defeat by an indigenous force. Even so, the Zulu kingdom was crushed six months later at Ulundi.
