Skobelev's troops storm the Teke fortress and pursue the fleeing

In January 1881, after a three-week siege, General Mikhail Skobelev's troops blew a breach in the wall and took the Teke Turkmen fortress. In the storming and the pursuit that followed, an estimated 14,000 Turkmens died, including women and children; Russian losses were several hundred. Akhal was annexed, and Turkmenistan marks 12 January as a day of remembrance.
