Britain occupies Egypt
The shelling of Alexandria and the defeat of Urabi's army
In summer 1882 the British fleet shelled Alexandria, and on 13 September Garnet Wolseley's army defeated Colonel Ahmed Urabi's forces at Tel el-Kebir. Egypt formally remained an Ottoman khedivate but in practice came under British control; a protectorate was declared in 1914.
