On 17 January 1893 a "Committee of Safety" of American and European businessmen deposed Queen Liliʻuokalani, who had planned a new constitution. Marines landed from the cruiser USS Boston left her no chance, and she yielded to avoid bloodshed. Sanford Dole headed the new republic, and in 1898 the US annexed the islands. A century later Congress formally apologised for the coup.
