Dreyfus affair
A Jewish officer's false conviction splits France

In 1894 Captain Alfred Dreyfus was convicted on forged evidence of spying for Germany and sent to Devil's Island. Émile Zola's article J'accuse (1898) turned the case into a national schism; Dreyfus was fully exonerated only in 1906.
