Philippine Revolution
Asia's first anti-colonial revolution

In August 1896 the secret society Katipunan, led by Andrés Bonifacio, rose against three centuries of Spanish rule. In December the Spanish executed the writer José Rizal, who became a national martyr. On 12 June 1898 Emilio Aguinaldo proclaimed the independence of the Philippines, but under the Treaty of Paris the islands passed to the United States.
