The Herero and Nama genocide
The 20th century's first genocide, in German South West Africa

In 1904 the Herero and Nama rose against German colonists. After the Battle of Waterberg, General Lothar von Trotha issued an extermination order: the Herero were driven into the Omaheke desert and cut off from waterholes, and survivors were sent to concentration camps. By various estimates up to 65,000 Herero and about 10,000 Nama died. Germany officially recognised it as genocide in 2021.
