Armenian genocide
Deportations and massacres destroyed Anatolia's Armenians

On 24 April 1915 hundreds of Armenian community leaders were arrested in Constantinople. The Young Turk government then began mass deportations of Armenians to the Syrian desert; columns perished from killings, hunger and disease. By various estimates 600,000 to 1.5 million died. Many states and most historians recognise it as genocide; Turkey rejects that characterisation.
