On 13 April 1919 General Dyer's troops fired without warning on thousands of people in the walled Jallianwala Bagh garden: 379 dead by the official count, about 1,000 by Indian estimates. Tagore returned his knighthood, and Gandhi launched the non-cooperation movement.
