Georgia becomes independent for the first time in a century

On 26 May 1918, as the Transcaucasian Federation broke up, the National Council of Georgia in Tiflis declared independence. Led by Social Democrats under Noe Zhordania, the republic elected a Constituent Assembly and was recognised by Soviet Russia in 1920, but the Red Army occupied it in 1921.
