Georgia
Disputed territory. Abkhazia and South Ossetia have declared independence; Russia recognised it in 2008, while most states regard them as part of Georgia. Georgia is a country in the Caucasus on the eastern coast of the Black Sea, with Tbilisi as its capital. On the map the name covers the Georgian states of the early Middle Ages, before the country was unified in the early 11th century, the Democratic Republic of Georgia of 1918–1921, overrun by the Red Army, and independent Georgia after the breakup of the USSR in 1991. Georgians speak Georgian, a Kartvelian language unrelated to those of their neighbours. After 1991 the country went through a civil war and wars in South Ossetia and Abkhazia, from which hundreds of thousands of Georgians were driven out, the Rose Revolution of 2003 and the 2008 war with Russia, after which Russia recognised Abkhazia and South Ossetia as independent.
