War in Abkhazia
The war ends with some 250,000 ethnic Georgians driven out
In August 1992 Georgian troops entered Abkhazia, whose leaders sought secession. Abkhaz forces, aided by North Caucasian volunteers and, many observers say, Russian military units, took Sukhumi in September 1993. An estimated 10,000–30,000 died; about 200,000–250,000 Georgians were expelled, which the OSCE called ethnic cleansing.
