First Chechen War
Russia's army storms Grozny but withdraws from Chechnya in 1996

In December 1994 Russian troops entered Chechnya, which had declared independence under Dzhokhar Dudayev; the New Year assault on Grozny brought huge losses and destroyed the city. An estimated 30,000–100,000 died, mostly civilians. The 1996 Khasavyurt Accord withdrew the troops and deferred the question of Chechnya's status.
