Black January in Baku
Soviet troops storm Baku, killing over a hundred civilians

On the night of 20 January 1990 Soviet troops entered Baku, which a week earlier had seen a pogrom of Armenians while the Popular Front took control of the city. Moscow called it restoring order; an estimated 130–150 people died, mostly Azerbaijani civilians. Azerbaijan marks the date as a day of mourning.
